Chicken and egg festival

Today we went to Moulton to the chicken and egg festival. It took us about an hour to get there, but it was worth the drive, it was a fun afternoon.
The first thing we saw when we payed and entered the building was gourds. The ENTIRE room was filled with vendors from the Alabama gourd society and they had the most amazing gourds I have ever seen. These were apple gourds and I really wanted to bring a few home, at $ 19 a piece I decided to just take a picture. :-)
This vendor had unbelievable Christmas themed gourds on display. The Santa collector in me had one fit after the other and I really, really wanted to buy every single one. Again, decided to be happy with the pictures...
Just look at this totem pole! There were so many more gourds I wanted to take pictures of, but then this entire (photo heavy) post would have been of gourds. There will be a "gourd show" in October in Cullman, AL and we might have to check it out...
Schaut euch diesen Totempfahl an!

One of the highlights of the festival was of course the chickens. We were a little disappointed, because with a name like chicken and egg festival we expected way more chicken/egg related exhibits. Just look at some of these beauties...

It's a little hard to see, but can you see the spurs on this guy? Looks pretty scary to me...

This one is a little fuzzy, but the hen laid the egg while Hannah and I were looking at her.
I'm in loooove!
Ich hab' mich ganz in diesen Hahn verliebt!
This guy was HUGE! He's without a doubt the biggest rooster I have ever seen!
After looking at the chickens we looked at a lot of arts and crafts and then some other animals. There were ponies, llamas and a very mean looking bull. Didn't get a good picture of him, but he scared Nadia the way he "stared" at her.
Beautiful alpacas.
Wunderschoene Alpakas.
There were also a lot of old tractors on display. Some seemed so tiny compared to some of the ones you see today.

Just look at that baby tractor... Nadia wanted to keep sitting on them.
All in all it was a very enjoyable afternoon, except the part where Hannah lost her (brand new) cell phone! We ran around for quite some time looking for it and finally went and checked lost and found. Thankfully there are still nice and honest people out there and somebody had turned it in. A huge thank you to the very kind person!

  1. Anke, had I known you a couple of summers ago I could have given you all of the apple and swan gourds you wanted...FOR FREE! Every year my hubby tries something "new"...we even had snake gourds one year. They are actually edible ones, unlike the others.

Glad that someone was honest and kind enough to turn Hannah's cell phone in to lost and found. Nice to know there are still folks like that out there.

Sounds like you had a wonderful day!

  2. I have never seen apple gourds before! How cool!! I will have to search for seeds on that one! Sounds like you had a really fun day, and I liked seeing all of the photos of the chickens. The tractors are pretty nice too, saying that one for hubby! We had a chicken similar to one of the ones above, and we called it the hippie chicken! It was good that someone was kind enough to turn in Hannah's cell phone. I'm sure she was relieved too. Glad your Sunday turned out great. Mine was outside again, and boy am I ever feeling it! I think I need a break!!
    Take Care!
    Liebe grusse,

  3. Hallo liebe Anke,

  7. I wanted to thank you for stopping by for a visit this morning, Anke.

We are looking forward to the time with our girlies in a few weeks! The reason for us going at this particular time is because our daughter-in-law is graduating from University of Maine with her degree in early childhood development. She graduates on the May 8. Our son is taking a week off from work that week we are there. So it will be a wonderful time of family fun. Now that we have our tickets bought I am SUPER excited! :)

You mentioned that you've always wanted to visit Maine. It really is a beautiful state and the people there are so proud of their state. The fall before our oldest granddaughter was born, we rented a house along with Matt and Ellen, right on the coast. We literally woke up to the Atlantic Ocean right outside the bedroom window! Absolutely awesome. Where the kids live now though is not along the coast...but the rural areas are beautiful, too. Hope you get to make the trip one day.

  8. Looks like you had a fun day!! The gourd head picture of the girls is cute! Glad you got your cell phone back! Yes, there still are a lot of good, honest people in this world. My daughter lost her drivers license a week ago, but it was found and now she has it back.
