Baking bread

Baking bread has to be one of my favorite things - that and eating it. I love trying out new recipes and I love it even more if the resulting bread tastes good.
This is a cracked wheat and basil bread and it is sooooo delicious. Still have a lot of frozen basil in the freezer from last year and I'll definitely make this bread again.
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
2 tbs shortening
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup bread flour
1/3 cup cracked wheat
1/4 cup fresh basil or 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1 tbs brown sugar
3/4 tsp salt
1 tsp active dry yeast

  2. Mmmmmm that sounds so good. Bread is one of my weaknesses too - that, and good German pickles.

So, how many times do you allow this bread dough to rise?

  5. Another wonderful bread recipe. Did you do this one in your bread machine? My "Anke's Receipes" collection is growing quickly. Have you ever thought about doing a blog for just cooking? You'd be a huge hit!

  6. Oh thank you Dianna for the sweet comment. Never thought about doing a blog just about cooking, mmmh...
Yes, this dough was made in the bread machine as are all my others. Making the dough in the machine is a time saver for me, especially during the week when I work and the kids are in school.

  7. Just wanted to come by and thank you for your kind words you left when you visited me today. Our daughter has always been a blessing, as has her brother been a blessing to us.

Hope you are enjoying good weather there. There is actually snow in the forecast for tomorrow for us. Only supposed to be snow showers though. In this area there always seems to be an Easter snow every year...but snow doesn't last long around here this time of the year. My first jonquils are blooming!
