Happy Birthday Greg!!!

Greg's Birthday is today, happy 42nd Birthday Schatz!!! He didn't really want to do anything special for his Birthday, nor did he want to go out to dinner. Since I had to attend a CPR class for work this morning (talk about bad timing) Hannah cooked lunch for everybody. She cooked sloppy joes (from scratch) and made a cucumber salad. There were still leftovers when I got home and she did a really good job.
Here's Greg opening a few gifts...
Hier oeffnet Greg ein paar Geschenke...Both girls like decorating the Birthday person with bows from the presents...
Beide Maedels dekorieren das Geburtstagskind immer mit den Schleifen von den Geschenken...

Yesterday the girls and I baked Greg a birthday cake. Nadia actually helped to bake the cake and Hannah helped with the frosting. Looks good, doesn't it?
Gestern haben wir noch einen Geburtstagskuchen fuer Greg gebacken. Nadia hat mit mir den Kuchen gebacken und Hannah hat die Glasur gemacht. Schaut gut aus, oder?
Last night was also my Bunco night. We (16 great friends, coworkers, neighbors) meet once a month to play and it is always a lot of fun. Last night was a Halloween theme and my contribution was a Jack-O-Lantern cheese ball.
Here are the recipes:

Jack-O-Lantern cheese ball
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
4 ounces cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup solid pack pumpkin
1/4 cup pineapple preserves
1/4 tsp ground allspice
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (I use freshly grated)
Beat all ingredients until smooth, cover bowl and refrigerate 2 - 3 hours or until cheese is firm enough to shape. Shape into round pumpkin, place on serving plate. Using a knife, score vertical lines down pumpkin. Insert pretzel rod or breadstick for stem, add facial features. I used olives and a jalapeno but you could use anything that strikes your fancy.
To make sure I had enough I doubled the recipe. Even after chilling it for 5 hours it was still pretty sticky, but easy enough to shape.

Chocolate cake
1 2/3 cups flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup cocoa
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1/2 cup shortening (do not use butter, margarine or oil)
1 tsp vanilla
Heat oven to 350, grease and flour two 9 inch round pans.
Combine dry ingredients in bowl (I put it right in the kitchen aid bowl), add eggs, buttermilk, shortening and vanilla. Beat on low speed for one minute, scraping bowl constantly. Beat on high speed three minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until wooden pick comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, remove from pans and cool completely.
Frost with Buttercream.
6 tbs butter
2 2/3 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup cocoa
4-6 tbs milk
1 tsp vanilla
Beat butter; add powdered sugar alternately with milk, beating to spreading consistency. Add vanilla.
